It’s All About Choice

Here we are, into the new year. The bills have arrived, which raises a question: Are you happy how you spent your money—or didn’t spend your money in 2013?

Did you go to the Nutcracker, after years of wanting to go, but thinking you didn’t have the money? Was this the year you baked bread, cookies or candy to give to the service workers in your life (postal, UPS, garbage, landlord)? Or was it the year you told those you normally spend money on that you’d given to a charity in their honor. Did you have a shopping budget, and stick to it for the first time ever? Congratulations! Keep going strong in 2014!

It all comes down to choice. This year, remind yourself that you are in control of the choices you make. Every day. All year. No one can upset you without you being “upset-able”. If you dread (insert group here) family, work, neighborhood… get-togethers, then make plans now to be somewhere else and with someone else for next holiday season. If that sounds impossible, another option is to make plans to show up at the event and not be offended, hurt, or angry. It’s about choice.

Back to your budget. Do you have it ready for the new year? It’s never too late.

Print it out, put it together, and write in your categories. Most important is tracking your expenses. If this sounds too complicated, then save every receipt in an envelope and add them up. If your income varies, keep a running tab of that, too. Bottom line, you need to know income in, income out, and the difference +/-. If you have extra money, save it. Save it for long term (retirement, big goals), short term (six months rent, and fun.) If you come up short, look at where you’re spending. There are several factors to this part, but usually, it about the spending.

How To Keep That Happy New Year Feeling

Here we are in a new year. How can we make the newness and cheerfulness last? Try this:

Unplug. Talk in person. Hang up. Make eye contact. Walk. Meditate, pray, be kind. Whisper, laugh, sing. Smile. Smile more. Hold the door for someone. Say, “Bless you” when someone sneezes. Yield to pedestrians. Breathe. Slow down. Light a candle, watch it burn. Read a book. Make a date, keep it. Invite someone over for dinner. Bring flowers to someone “Just because”. Plan a mini getaway. See your town through tourist-eyes. Buy the next person in line a coffee. Feed an expired parking meter. Hand out lotto scratcher tickets to strangers. Give compliments freely. Say “Thank you.” Say “You’re welcome.” Wave to your neighbors. Give a genuine complement.

Every moment can be a new start. If you wake up grumpy, you can change it. If you go to bed upset, get out of bed until you find your peace. Don’t wait a year to start over. Happy New Here! Celebrate the newness and cheerfulness right now. (I love confetti!)

How big is your container? (a look into consciousness)

If you go to the ocean with a teaspoon, that spoon will fill up with water pretty fast. Go down to the ocean with a bucket, and you’ll get more water. If it’s raining and you leave a bucket outside—but the bucket is turned up-side-down, it wont’ catch a drop.

What if our containers, instead of teaspoons and buckets, were our minds, where our imaginations held what we desired. In New Thought, water is symbolic for consciousness, but let’s shift to the container itself. How big is it? How much good can you accept? If you go to the ocean with a teaspoon, you won’t be able to accept much. What if you go to the ocean with a bucket? How about leaving a big bowl, upright to catch the rainfall?

Do you have an abundance consciousness? Do you read this and envision the Grand Canyon as your container to fill?

Try this:

Sit and think of lots of different containers you could use. Think big! See them fill up with experiences you’d like to have. Is your container large enough to hold an airplane? Cruise ship? House? Lots of loving relationships? Keep expanding it to hold more wonderful things. Remember, the universe keeps expanding, so why not your container!

How Do You K.I.S.S.? (Simplicity)

One hand, everyone talks about simplicity. Slow down, more is less and be present. On the other hand, life is full of “To-Do” Lists. Even before we get into the items on the list that can instill guilt (things like eat healthy, exercise, stay within a budget) we face US and THEM items. How do you rank in taking care of you as well as taking care of others?

How do you k.i.s.s.? (keep it simple, sweetie.)

I don’t mind vacuuming, ironing, washing windows, or painting walls. I remember sharing in exasperation one evening, “I hate drying and putting away silverware!” After laughter died down, I was asked, “What do you want to do?” I’ll wash dishes. I’ll unload the dishwasher—except the silverware.” It was one of the easiest deals I’ve ever made, and it made both of us happy.

If you make your kids’ lunch every day, and hate doing it, ask yourself, “Is there someone else who can do this?” How old are your kids? Is your partner/spouse willing to do it? Have you asked them to help, or to swap a chore?

Are you making their lunch, then buying yours? Are you okay with doing that from a budget, health, and calorie standpoint? If not, plan ahead. Make enough dinner to have leftovers for lunch, and as you clean-up after dinner, pack your lunch into your lunch box container.

Find a way that makes you happy. If you’re not happy, and you’re making a meal, some-body is ingesting that energy of hating making it. Eeek! Good reason to bless your food! Same goes for restaurants. You don’t know what sort of energy is in the kitchen. If you’re keeping it simple by eating out, take a moment before eating it to bless your food.

Are you one of the growing households that cook your dog a fresh chicken or beef dinner? I know someone who does this—and the food the people eat may as well be—dog food! Food expiration dates, to-go meals, eating standing up rather than sitting at the table. If the dog out lives them, I hope he keeps the maid! Keep is simple, sweetie. Both you and Fido deserve to be healthy, and get your run-around at the park, not doing chores.

Have you just vacuumed? Quick! Invite some friends over! Or, first invite someone over so it’s motivation to vacuum. It’s a two-for-one that way. You don’t have to re-arrange the furniture to vacuum, just zip here and there, and it’ll add some wow appeal to the room. It’s not a full-on clean, it’s a simple way to keep things looking nice.

Have you started your holiday gift giving list? Maybe this is the year you really do say, “I’m having a party, and that’s my gift to everyone.” Or, in honor the names of your friends/family, you donate to Toys for Tots, Heifer International, or some other organization. Maybe you decide to make a list of 25, 50, 100 “reasons why I love you.” It doesn’t cost a penny, but I’ve been told, “That was one of the best gifts anyone has ever given me.”

Whatever you do—from making lunch to gift giving, do it consciously. If you don’t enjoy doing it, find another way. If it’s overwhelming, take a step back. Breathe.

Good Vibrations

Confidence is more than attitude, it’s a vibration of energy.  Fear is also a vibration of energy. When you vibrate at a positive level, you become a walking magnet for good people and things to come your way. If you drop some money, someone will call out to let you know. Or, you won’t drop money. You may even find money.

When you vibrate at a negative level, you still become a walking magnet—but for people to kick you when you’re down, take advantage of you, or for things to break down, delays, or just not work in flow.

On either side of the coin, you’ll attract the matching reality to your vibration. If you make a habit of feeling excited, joyful, and satisfied, those energies will tip the scale in your vibration, and results cannot but match those vibrations. If you’re not at the vibration you’d like right now, sit for ten minutes with this. Shift your vibration. Your vibration will not shift after something good happens. Good things will happen when you shift your vibration.

If you do consciously shift your vibration then say, “It worked for half a day, but then it didn’t” check your vibration. It’s easy to fall back into habit. You may start out being very aware of holding exciting thoughts and next time you check, you learn you’ve been worrying about something, or having an argument in your mind with someone who upset you months back.

Before going to bed, you can program your subconscious mind to vibrate at a positive level. Think happy, joyful, exciting thoughts. Feel how you’ll be relieved when the outcome of your problem is solved. Wonderful! Smile your way to sleep. The subconscious mind doesn’t argue. It only says, “Yes!” When you imprint a happy vibrational energy just before going to bed, it’s handed to your subconscious mind for the night. Because your conscious mind isn’t involved, you have a head start on shifting your energy.

God is a Verb. Life is a Verb. You Are a Verb.

Quantum physics will back up the claim, “There is no time or space.” The power of now is constantly unfolding, expressing. Life is a process, unfolding now, and always.

Even when we’re thinking in the past or future tense, we’re in the present moment—thinking about another time. That’s why it’s important to say affirmations in the present tense. The message to the subconscious is “This is happening now. I am successful now. I am healthy now.” If you frame your affirmations in the future, “I will be successful” or “My success is just around the corner” your success (or health, or relationship, etc) will always be “out there” “just around the corner.”

God is a verb. Life is a verb. We are verbs. We’re doing, being, believing, having. What’s your name? Add “ing” to it. Are you Daving? Cathying? Yes! At all times, you’re experiencing and expressing. God and Life are experiencing and expressing through you. There’s no separation between you, Life and God. To give, there must be a receiver. To receive, there must be a giver, and the consciousness to receive. Allow Life to express in, around, through and for you.

Live life as a verb. Do. Be. Have.

Ways to be a better saver of money

According to Rand Corp. economists, in a study on money saving behavior from August 2012 to March 2013, people who wrote their money saving goals down saved 64%. People who did not write down their goals saved 53%. In this study, savers were given money and some of the savers were asked to write the following: “I am a good saver. I will commit myself to achieving my savings goals.” A third group in the study were those assigned to an account where they could not withdrawal any money over the next six months. That group saved even more than the other two.

If you want to save more, write it down, or share it with a trusted friend or family member. It seems to be the act of pledging to be a better saver that makes a person better at saving. People want to have their words and deeds match, especially if others know about a goal. Another sure way to set you up for success is to have some of your savings hard to get to.

Savings? Words matching deeds? Accountability? There’s an app for that! Yep. If you can’t come up with your own motivation to save, there’s an app and website Stickk.com by Yale behavioral-finance experts. With this app you can create a contract and share it with others. You can even include a penalty if you slack off. The penalty can be something like authorizing a credit card payment to a charity. Stickk.com has found that users who do share their goal with supportive people and chose to elect the penalty, have a success rate of 80%, while those who keep their goal of savings private succeed nearly 40% of the time.

How to Visualize

If you want something, you’ve got to experience it in your mind’s eye before you can have it. It’s not, “I’ll believe it when I see it.” It’s “I’ll see it when I believe it!” Visualization is different than daydreaming. Daydreaming is just out there. In a daydream, you imagine without structure. You might even talk to a flying squirrel in your daydream. With visualizing, you’ll want structure. It’s not pondering what could happen, but what you want to happen. If you want a better job, say working in nature, you visualize yourself happily doing the job, wearing the uniform, and if you “see” a flying squirrel in your mind’s eye, it’s part of the job’s joy, not a random thought, or concern of the squirrel being a pest to plants and eroding the hillside.

Let’s say you want to pass your driver’s test, or get a promotion at work. Whatever you want, decide on it first. Then, lower your shoulders, and unwind from any anticipation or pressure to get what you want. Next, make sure you have five minutes uninterrupted to visualize what you want as if you’ve just gotten it. See yourself being acknowledged with words and actions, “You passed your driver’s test. Congratulations!” See people at work smiling, congratulation cards and e-mails, and things on your desk being packed up to move to the big office down the hall. Hear your friends and family say things like, “Good for you!” “Well done!” Feel the hugs, hand shakes or high fives. Take in the atmosphere. What does it feel like? Your body should feel the excitement of your accomplishment. It’s just happened! Jump! Shout! Feel the glory!

The feeling part of visualization is called seeding. Your thoughts create feelings, and your feelings create a corresponding vibration (high or low) in your body. All thought creates form, the form it takes depends on the vibration connected with it.

There are two types of visualization. One is having a precise idea of what you want before you begin visualizing it. With this type of visualization, you know what you want, and repeat that same vision every day. The other type of visualization is to just let positive thoughts of the outcome of your desire flow.

Keys to visualization: 

  • Keep it positive.
  • Keep it about the end result—as if you’ve just achieved it!
  • Visualize at least once a day for five minutes. It’s better to visualize 5 minutes 1x/day than 1 hour 1x/week.

New Thought: What is Law of Mind?

The Universal mind creates. It doesn’t judge. It doesn’t condemn or have favorites. It responds to our direction. Our astrological sign doesn’t matter, nor does our religion. What matters is how we direct the Law of Mind. This is the energy that knows all, and because we have free-will, It waits on our guidance.

Being impersonal, It doesn’t know what it creates—only that it does create. If It seems to create what we don’t want, or wishy-washy results, that’s a sign that we, not God (Universe, Law, Energy—call it whatever you’re comfortable with) need to make a change. We need to shift our thinking, or consciousness (which will eventually shift our thinking.) We need to get clear on what we want and to decide that our want is worth taking the time to pray, meditate or read. Is it worth noticing our passing thoughts, our off-the-cuff comments? We can’t think and say negative things and experience positive outcomes. We can’t tell our woeisme story and experience strength and success. Which side of the fence are you on? If you teeter, your results teeter.

Make a conscious choice about an experience you want. A better job, a loving relationship, moving to a place you love as much as where you live now—and some. To set it in motion, you must first set in mind. By setting it in your mind, you place it in the Mind of God—The Infinite Intelligence, The Law of Mind, The One.

Next, you must do your part by keeping negative away from what you claim to want. Negative comes in the form of worry, doubt, and thoughts as well as words and actions. If you know a friend of yours will laugh, make fun of, or disagree, it’s not the time to share this with them. You must get yourself on board first before you try to recruit others. Even when you get in the grove and life is humming along, I’d steer clear of what amounts to proselytizing to those who don’t want to be in your club. It’s a waste of your time and energy. If they show interest in how your life works, share it. If not, let them do their thing, and you do yours. otherwise, they’ll try to sell you their opinion in why your way doesn’t work, and that brings you back to doubt. The only way for someone to learn this stuff is buy doing. If “it” doesn’t work, perhaps the designer (you) made an error. Not specific enough. Too specific. Gave it to Universal Mind, then took it right back.

. . . What perfect timing! I just saw someone attempt to enter the laundry room. They punched in the code, and couldn’t get in—so they kicked the door. They went to get the manager. He came and put in the code, and the door opened. Ta-Daa! Next time something doesn’t go smoothly for you, stop. Step back. Take a breath and bring Universal Mind into the situation.

Arizona Hotshots Baptism of Fire


The Yarnell  fire is 100% contained now*. The nineteen firemen who recently lost their lives in the Yarnell, AZ have been in my thoughts. I’m not a news junkie. In the world of 24/7 news coverage—where we hear the same reports in various sensationalized ways, I manage to hear sound bites, and follow up if I choose to learn more. This story shocked me, as it has shocked so many others.

Some twenty plus years ago, my brother (now retired) was a hotshot wildland fireman in California. Like most hotshots, he loved his job. He continued to promote in job title, but his favorite days where as a hotshot. Like many hotshot crews, his crew was flown all over the US and sometimes other countries.

Hotshots are recognized as an elite crew of firefighters mostly male, and extremely physically fit. While they are young, they have their heads on straight. Not only their lives, but their buddies’ lives depend on it. They basically live with their coworkers for half the year.

During breaks between fires, I remember my brother bringing home some new hotshot friends he’d met while jointly fighting a raging forest fire somewhere. It was after a fire in Idaho I’d learned about “shake and bake.” It looks like a “moon blanket”, a thin foil sleeping bag that is only used as an absolute last resort. The firemen shake it out—then bake it out while they wait for the fire to pass over them. As the fireman in the video say, “Everyone sees God when they’re in a shake and bake tent.” If the wind shifts, it can flip these tents open and the firefighter will burn to death.

For me, it is unfathomable that nineteen hotshots died on the same day in the same location. The only way I can make sense of it is to believe the wind shifted something fierce. I bless the families and the Prescott community, as well as the comradeship of hotshots worldwide. I believe these nineteen souls move on the wings of love.

If you pray, please do for this community feeling the loss. Lift them up with your thoughts. Hold them in the Light of healing consciousness. Trust that they will find peace in their own way with this fire’s legacy.

Knowing that Native American roots are deep in Arizona, I believe these individuals were escorted into their transition by Native American ancestors. The earth is sacred, and these individuals were caretakers of the earth, releasing their life face down to the earth. Hearing only the wind and fire. Now, they beat the drums their families hear as heartbeats of newly born children.

*P.S. Four days ago I heard the fire was 90 percent contained, and today people were allowed to return home. But I haven’t heard an update on the fire. If it isn’t fully contained, sorry for misinformation. Thanks to all who’ve worked  at fire containment, and saving lives.
