I was reading Money Magazine (April 2012), and came across 25 secrets to paying for college. I learned of an option that a few dozen universities now offer. It’s called co-op housing. I think it’s brilliant.
The example used reminded me of some youth hostels. In exchange for four hours a week of chores (kitchen duty, maintenance, cleaning) rent is reduced. This four hours a week totals savings of $9,000 a year over a standard dorm and cafeteria bill. Meals are included in co-op housing.
The student written up in the co-op housing example is at UCLA. He works in the kitchen and said he used to spend more time cooking and cleaning when he lived on his own. Now he has time and money!
